Head-Quarters Sprague Light Cavalry,

Camp Norton,

Plattsburgh, N.Y., May 16th 1863.

His Excellency

Richard Yates, Governor, State of Illinois.

Sir:

I beg to enclose a lettre of introduction from Mr Kreismann Secretary of legation in Berlin. Mr Kreismann with whom I was well acquainted, was kind enough to exert himself in my favor in order to facilitate my admission in the american Army as officer. I have been an officer in the Prussian Army for five years, about 14 months in the United States and held a captaincy on General Fremont's staff during his short campaign in Western Virginia. When General Fremont was superseded, I lost my position. Not having the means to raise a company, I was induced to accept a position as Ord. Sergt. in a new regiment "Sprague Light Cavalry" under promise of an early appointment as commisfioned officer. This regiment is still very far from being ready for the field as it has but few recruits at present. I was educated at the military Academy in Berlin and always very fond of military life. I would be happy Excellency to receive an appointment as Staff or Company officer, feeling rather uncomfortable in my present position.

Availing the favor of an early reply

I remain Excellency

Yours respectfully

very obt. Serv.
