His Excellency, Governor Yates.
Dear Sir.
For the favor you bestowed upon brother James, in giving him a Lieutenant's Commission, accept our warm grateful thanks. We appreciate the great kindness in promoting him irregularly. I earnestly promise for him that it shall not be misplaced.
Our wishes are that he may have increased strength to give death dealing blows to the rebels until the North has “conquered a Peace”, and then that he may have the Joy of helping to elect you, the soldiers true friend,
to the highest office in our Government.
