Hon Richard Yates Gov. State of Illinois

Dear Sir

Having resigned my commission as 1st Lieut of Co C 28th of Ill Vol Infty for the purpose of coming east to regain the use of my left wrist and hand. I find with a two months trial of one of the best surgeons in the United States that there is but little chance for improvement. I understand that the government proposes to furnish employment to men disabled in the field and if not asking too much I wish your influence to procure me a clerkship or some position where I can make myself useful (not a sinecure) I have had five months experience as Brigade Q. M. having served in that capacity under Col. A. K. Johnson from Nov 1862 until April 1st 1863.
