His Exc Govr Yates

Dear Sir:

Let me introduce to you Jno D Copeland of Logan Co. He is an old acquaintance of mine, has been for more than 20 years; and withal is a loyal man, and a gentleman. What he wishes is this – he had a son in the army of the U.S.A who died near Vicksburg on or about the 12th inst. Mr. Copeland wishes to go down to or near Vicksburg and bring home the remains of his son. He may want to send John Nickolson in his place. Whatever Mr Copeland says you can depend on. Give him a permit to go and oblige all if you please

Your Friend
