His Excellency

Richard Yates

Sir.

Will you do me the great favor to send me a recommendation for a commission in the Invalid Corps. I have delayed it so long that Pennsylvania's quota of Officers is very nearly filled up, and it cannot be brought unless immense pressure is brought to bear. You know I was wounded in the left knee and crippled around about five months and then resigned being almost ashamed to receive Govmt pay without rendering an equivalent service, and then I was taken with bronchitis which has incapacitated me from performing the duties of Clerk in the Arsenal at this City – a position which I now

hold and endeavor to fill to the best of my ability. I have the recommendations of my Regmtl, Brigade, & Division Commanders, have passed the examination of the Board of Enrollment in my District, I expect to get four out of five of the congressmen in my County, which along with Gov Curtin's & Hon I Cameron's influence I expect to be able to make the wind blow I served as Capt of Co F 72d Regmt P.V. twenty two months and was in all the battles with McClellan from Ball's Bluff (through the Peninsula) to Antietam and now that I am unable to make a livelihood from wounds and disease. I desire some active (light) service (as my Doctor prescribes) to see if I cannot regain strength and health. You will therefore confer a great favor on me (which

I will endeavor to reciprocate) by sending me a recommendation directed to Col James B Fry Provost Marshal Genl so that I may send it along with my papers to Washington. As time is an object in these matters I hope you will give this your immediate as well as favorable attention and you will

Oblige Very Respectfully

Your Obt Servt

Wishes the Governor to recommend him for a position in the Invalid Corps. He is wounded in left knee, and has crippled around for five months and does not wish to draw pay without rendering some service to the Government.
