St Louis Aug. 17th
Dear Sir
When I saw you in the State House I said I would write you further in reference to the position you were kind enough to offer me.
I am still hesitating in reference to the matter: have received a letter from the N.Y. Tribune desiring me to go South again if any thing of interest should be in progress, and should go but for hot weather & poor health. On one of two points in reference to the position first referred to, I would like information. Can I make a temporary arrangement, say for two or three months, so that
I might then, or even previously enter the army should opportunity offer? Is the position designated as a trial and probation, or having no reference to anything beyond? You said something which seemed to hint at that, but left me in the dark. As you said, the office is not in itself altogether what I should desire although in many respects pleasant. Allow me to say that I fully appreciate your kind intentions in making the proposal, and should I accept, I will do all in my power to merit them
Believe me sir
