New York
August 25th 1863.
To His Excellency,
Richard Yates,
Governor of Illinois.
Sir, - We send you by to-day's mail, for your perusal, a copy of "Camp and Outpost Duty for Infantry," by Major General Butterfield.
This work has attracted much attention as a useful textbook for volunteers. Many Generals in the field have not only spoken highly of it, but have had it purchased for their troops.
We enclose you extracts from the letters of Major Generals Hunter, Sherman, Dix, Heintzelman, and others, showing their opinions of its value as a textbook for the instruction of troops. We would also refer you to the opinions expressed by Major Generals McClellan, Hooker, and others, in the preface of the work.
Should you deem it proper, in view of the services the militia are now called upon to perform, or for the better instruction and perfection in their duties of volunteers leaving your state, to place copies of this valuable work in their hands, we should be pleased to receive your orders.
We have the honor to be,
Very Respectfully,
Your Obdt Servants,
