Mr. John M. Snyder

Springfield Illinois

Sir

When I was in Springfield as few days ago, you were kind enough to furnish me your assistance in whatever might benefit me or conduce to my welfare. Taking advantage of that promise, I would respectfully ask that I may receive a letter of recommendation from his Excellency, the Governor, for a position in the Regular Army. You are, I believe, familiar with my record as a military man and if consistent with your will, I would be glad if you would lend your assistance in this matter as early as practicable.

With Sentiments of high regard

I am very Respectfully

Your friend

Wm H. Ashburn
