Peoria, Sept. 23rd 1863.
His Excellency,
Richard Yates
Springfield Ill.
Dear Sir;
The undersigned, being two of the committee appointed by the U.S. A. of this city, to address you on the subject of the judicial election, that is to e held in this district, this fall, beg leave to represent, that in our opinion it would not be well to have the election of judge on the same day of the general election, for fear that party strife may run so high, at that time, that a very improper person might be elected. We fear that after you have received judge Merriman's resignation, it will be too late to have an election ordered and advertised before the excitement, connected with the general election, will have begun to rage. If so, please place it sometime after say about fifteen days, so that party strife may have had to time to subside.
Judge Powell, the other committee man, is in Chicago, or he would no doubt join with us in this letter.
Yours in haste
C. Ballance.
