Bladensburg, Oct 23rd 1863.

To his Excellency,

Gov. Yates,

My object in writing is to ascertain whether you know any thing of a person representing herself as Mrs. Major Gage and commissioned by you. She is medium hight dark red hair and very prominent blue eyes. She says her brother Dr. Bennet was medical director on Gen. Banks Staff. She was taken in our house very late one night out of charity, and when she left, she took clothing to the amount of fifty dollars. We thought it best to apply to you, as you could inform us where draws her pay. As to references to who I am, I refer

you to my relatives Judge Browning of Quincy, and Mrs. Elizabeth Duncan of Jacksonville, Ill.

You will confer a very great favor by attending to this immediately.

Very Respectfully,

Hallie L. Wright
