Governor Yates Sir
I now seat myself to let you know my condition, I am a widow, I was sent here as a southern refugee last June, my husband was a native of Alabama but was a loyal man and went to the federal lines at corinth and enlisted in Company E 64th reg of Yate's Sharp Shooters, he had his family brought to the lines and from there I was sent here without a cent to buy bread for my children (and I have four) and I am in a suffering condition, there is three months pay due to my husband besides his bounty & my pension, I have employed
a Lawyer to try and get what is coming to me but he says it may be a year before I can get anything and that is the reason I have written to you to know if you will be so kind as to assist me in getting my pension and bounty so I can support my orphant children for it is impossible for me to work for their support and the people here talks of binding them out but I am not willing to have that done I can support them if I can get my rights my husband died the first of last June his name was Jesse C. McCeg in Company & reg as before stated, I have a certificate from Col Marrill to show I am his widow please address Mrs. Nancy McCeg Decatur, Ills.
