Sandwich Illinois Nov 11th 1863
Hon. R Yates
Dear Sir
My son or rather stepson Lieut G.R. [Vernon?] of the 14th U.S. Infantry, now with Gen Meade has faithfully served his country almost from the commencement of the present civil war, has passed through many of the severest battles, beginning with that of Bull Run and closing with the one fought last Saturday morning He has undergone many hardships and being of a maturaly slender constitution it has gone hard with him. If he could be ordered on light duty for a short time it would be of a great relief to him. May I not ask of you this favor to employ a little of your influence to have the boy ordered on recruiting or mustering service for a short time? By so
doing you will lay me under obligations which I shall not soon forget.
He would like to be ordered to Illinois but would be perfectly satisfied to be relieved by almost any change.
Yours truly
L.P. Crawford
