Alton Ill: 12th Decr 1863
To His Excellency Richard Yates
Governer of Ill: &c &c
Dear Sir
The friendly and intimate confidence which I had in your acquaintance at Jacksonville some 15 years ago induced me to ask of your Excelce a favour in hope that you will engage your friendly influence in my behalf
I have resided in the state of Iowa untill Sepr of last year when I enlisted in the cause of our Country by entering as a Private in the 37th Iowa Vol. Infantry (or the Graybeard Regt) suposing that I could do the Duty of a Soldier in garrison (Duty) but after a trial of 15 Months I find that it is too much for a man of my years (60) to stand Guard so much in the night. I have thought that a situation might be had by being detailed to the Commissary or [Janc?] or Stamp Department as clerk or otherwise or to the New Barracks at Rock Island and all such posts in this Regt are given to favourites, I have ventured to draw your attention to my case now My Dear Sir would you be so kind as exert your influence to procure such a Post for me as you think me capable of filling or refer me to some of the Military or Govermt officers who may
have such at their disposal a few lines fm your Excellency to our Commanding Officer Colonel Kincaid or through Govr Kirkwood would be very sure of procuring such as detail trusting you will excuse all this trouble
I remain Your Excellences
obt humble Servt
Willm Braichwood
Your [illegible] will well recollect my residence next to John Hardins Mother old, Mrs [Clag?] ----
