State of Illinois
Executive Department.
Springfield January 5th 1864
His Excellency Richard Yates
Governor State of Illinois
Governor:
In conversing with a State officer yesterday afternoon, I learned that Adjt General A.C. Fuller had expressed himself opposed to me and my interests; and that he had issued the order relieving me from active duty at the arsenal, as a preliminary step, to ultimately deprive me of employment.
In view of this fact I would most respectfully request Your Excellency, not to submit my case to General Fuller; for I cannot now look for favors in
that direction: nor can I consent to serve a man whom I know bears me no good will.
If you will consent to order me back to the Arsenal; I will as hastily as possible adjust all things devolving upon me; and hold myself in rediness to resign the position which you so kindly bestowed upon me.
I take this opportunity to sincerely thank your Excellency, for the many kindnesses received at your hands.
I am Governor
Very Respectfully
Your Obedent Servant
