Dear Sir
As a soldier in the field in the service of my Country I adress you upon a subject that has a deep interest to me but may not interest you mutch, I wish to ask of you a favor, I belong to the 88th Regt of Ills Vol Inft now in front of Chattanooga seven miles about the 5th of this month I made an application for a leave of absence to visit my family which I have be seperated from four years with the exception of one week. My wife being sick & not expected to live it was granted twenty days from Nashville I started & made the best time that I could
But owing to detainage on the way by snow & loss getting off of the track it took me eight days getting home I found my wife verry sick & I would ask you to give me an extention of my leave of absence for ten days if you can consistently by so doing you will confer upon me a great favor for which I will be verry thankful pliese answer by return mail or by the soldier that I sent this by with this I close hoping to hear from you soon
