Head Quarters 108th Reg. Ill. Vol.
Corinth Miss. Jany 21. 1864
Hon. Richard Yates
Gov. of Ill,
Sir - I have the honor to inclose you a copy of application sent by me to the Secy of War, and ask your cooperation by lending your influence to procure the order of detail
I find on application to Head Quarters 16th Army Corps, there is no authority there to order the detail, hence the application to the War Department. The application is sent through the regular military channel with the approval of the commanders here.
The Regiment has seen some hard service since it has been in the field and is very much reduced in numbers. Our aggregate today is 383.
I find that a number of regiments which were organized and took the field about the same time with ours, have reported details for recruiting for their respective regiments.
If we can get the detail asked for I am satisfied we should meet with reasonable success in the vicinity where the regiment was raised and our reports show that we very much need all the recruits we can obtain. I am satisfied that my officers as a body are as efficient as any in the service of the same experience, and all are determined on all occasions to prove themselves worthy the proud name that Illinois soldiers have won on nearly every contested field of the war
I hope it will not be asking too much to ask your influence with the Sec'y of war in this behalf. I am very Respectfully Your Obt Servt
