Alton, Ill. July 19/60.

Dear Governor,

Are you not ashamed of yourself to insist on my making a speech at Burlington, when I am nearly [worn?] out of my boots in going round this State? So far from going into Iowa where Republicanism needs no assistance, I shall expect you to meet me at Galesburg & Monmouth & make speeches at both places – We are having a close fight in

Ill. The Democrats are spending money like water & [makeing?] a desperate effort to retain possession of the Legislature--

Of course I would come to Burlington, if Iowa was in doubt & it was supposed I could do any good; but of course you are aware that I shall be very much worn out with the speaking which I shall be compelled to do in this State.

Will you not visit me at Galesburg & Monmouth It is possible that I may also go to Oquawaka. I am somewhat hoarse now & do not mean to make any more appointments till I see how I can stand the [canvass?]. Write me at Springfield

Truly Yours

Lyman Trumbull
