Sir:

I have to acknowledge the receipt of a letter from R. V. Whaley Esq. of the 8th inst. relative to the claim of Richard W. Inman, a British subject residing in Kananha County West Virginia, for indemnity for certain property destroyed during the late rebellion, and requesting me to communicate with you on the subject.

In reply I would state that


claims of the nature of that of Mr. Inman are considered by the "Special Claims Commifsion", appointed by special orders No. 39 [illegible mark] of August 9th 1866, from the War Department, and that that Department could give you the information required.
