Mr. French -

On coming home from court I found your excellent letter, dated the 3d inst; and now let me say I am much much obliged to you for it. With the letter I received your address. I shall read it soon carefully. I casually looked over it and what I saw & read pleased me. I am happy to know that my letter on Mr Lincoln's Religion gave you some insight into Mr Lincoln's nature. The letter is true: it will never be contradicted substantially. Mr Lincoln scorned all Theology – all the mechanics of Christianity – hated formalism & cant. Mr Lincoln was large – and charitable – deep & broad in his religious views If I ever visit Washington I shall most assuredly call and see you. I thank you again for your letter and add-

ress. I thank you for the information contained in your letter.

Your Truly

W H Herndon
