Hon Richard Yates. Govenor

Dr Sir

You no doubt bear in your remembrance Col Austin Light formerly of the 39th Ill - of whom I desire to say that he is at work for the pitiful sum of $24 pr month to support of his family.

Now if his dismissal from the service was unjust which I understand & believe to be the case can not justice be done him by giving him one of the new Negro regiments which are to be raised.

He has seen some 16 years of regular service and holds 3 honorable discharges and with the fidelity which he shows to him family and country, surely he should not go unrewarded.

Do you think so

Most Respectfully Yours O B Maples

Letter written March 5 63.
