Office of the
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company.
Chicago, Illinois, Feby 28 1863
To His Excellency
Governor Richard Yates
Honored Sir
William O. Avery was a clerk in the employ of this company when our President made his call for 600.000 men = His pay was $55. per month & he was in the line of promotion and would by this time probably have received a Salary of $800. or $900 per year had he remained with us =
He left us and volunteered as a private in the Board of Trade Battery - from which he has been detached as Private Secretary to Maj Genl Rosecrans
As chairman of the Railroad Committee of this city for the 89th Regt Ill Vol I have had occasion to correspond with many officers of the Army of the Cumberland & have thus learned that Mr Avery has been recommended to your Excellency for a commission as Lieutenant and knowing his
ability, and integrity I cannot refrain from adding my testimony in his behalf and expressing the belief that if you can consistently give him the appointment, it will meet the approval of our entire Railroad Community, with whom his many good qualities have made him a general favorite
I believe that as an Officer he will continue to do his Country faithful Service & prove an honor to the Army and the Loyal State of Illinois
Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant
Amos T Hall
I fully concur in the above -
Yours Truly John L Hancock
Amos T Hall & John L. Hancock
