Office of the President of Illinois College,
Jacksonville, March 9th, 1863
Hon. Lyman Trumbull
U.S. Senate
Dear Sir,
The demands of the war for the services of young men has operated so severely on the patronage and the resources of our college, that it is desirable for the sake of curtailing our expenses, temporarily to reduce our working force.
An application has therefore been made to the President to appoint Prof Rufus C. Crampton either to the office of Quartermaster, or Paymaster in the army. Mr. Crompton can be most thoroughly vouched for, as
a loyal man, fully in sympathy with the policy of the Administration, of undoubted integrity, of practical habits, and imminent qualifications for the [office?] and successful dispatch of business, and of excellent social and personal qualities.
We think it right that for the purpose of saving so important an institution as this college from being [embarassed?] and severely crippled by the war, the President should confer such an office as we have asked for, on so worthy a man as Prof. Crampton; thus enabling the college temporarily to relieve its finances, and when peace again returns to our –-- now afflicted country, to obtain Prof. Crampton's services in his proper Department of Instruction.
Any aid you can render us in receiving such an [encouragement?] will be most gratefully received and will be a valuable aid rendered to an important public Institution.
Your most respectfully and truly
J.M. Sturtevant
