Hon Ricd Yates
Worthy Governer
When I wrote you in the winter in regard to the condition of Jenkin Barron of Co. H of the 28th Ills Vol who is now, and has been in the Hospital at Evansville, about ten months, an answer was delayed: his wife being restive and anxious requested that would write a line to the Surgeon and she would enclose it to her husband who would hand it to the Surgeon; I wrote the enclosed which has been returned to me with the lines pened on the outside. Mrs Barron informs that her husband writes that he was illy treated after he hand over the letter. I expect you received a large number of letters on this
Subject of such Soldiers; and probably often annoyed; but I am told by a soldier now at home on a visit who has been out nearly two years, that there are freequently Hospitals kept running with a few soldiers only, (& they should be either sent to Camp or discharged,) merely to hold a paying position for a few quacks who should also either be discharged or made to sholder a musket. Mr Barron writes that he has not heard a whisper of any hope for his getting out of prison; I fear there is something wrong down there. I wish I had the chance I would stir them up.
Respectfully
H. S. Thomas
