His Excly Gov. Yates,

Dear Sir:

At the urgent request of our friends here, I address you in regard to Provost Marshals of this State. Proper appointments, as you must fully understand, is of vital importance to us. Numerous petitions have already been signed for unworthy and dangerous persons. The union men of our District, and indeed of the whole State, will be in such a working condition, in a few days more, as to be able to suggest the right man, and to bring to bear their power to have him appointed. We desire a proper amount of deliberation; and that the Administration give its friends a fair chance to be heard. We fear, because Copperheads have so frequently foiled us, and insinuated

themselves into important positions, dangerous to the Country.

See that we have a little time and are heard.

Most Resptly Yours

H.G. McPike

A.G. McPike,

Alton, March 13. '63.

Ansd. April 2.
