Cairo March 21st 1863
Hon Richard Yates
Governor of Illinois
Dear Sir
I have been requested by some of my friends in Cairo & vicinity to apply to your excellency for the appointment of Provost Marshall for this District under the last conscription Act of Congress. If your Honor thinks me worthy of the position & will give me the appointment I pledge myself to discharge the duties of the office to the best of my ability & I think that my experience in the army will give me a decided advantage over some other persons who have made application for the appointment. & as it is reported the appointments are to be made of persons who have been disabled
in the service. If this be true surely I will stand a pretty good chance for being appointed. I send no recommendations though I could get them but I presume it unnecessary as there is a number of recommendations filed in your office from various persons recommending me for different positions in the army. I hope that the loss of my right arm will not prevent me from being appointed.
Hoping to know the result of this application soon.
I remain very respectfully
