To his Excellency

Richard Yates

Governor of the State of Illinois

Sir

Having resigned my position as Chief Engineer of the Brunswick & Florida Rail-Road in the State of Georgia within the present month for the purpose of offering my services in a Military Capacity to the United States, I ask that you will be good enough to give me the opportunity of doing duty in the Engineer or Artillery Corps of the State of Illinois. My professional training fitting me best for either of those branches of the service. I shall (Do) leave here to-morrow to join my family in Chicago and will gladly receive there an answer to this letter
