To His Excellency Rhd Yates

Governor of Illinois

Dr Sir Beleiving it to be the duty of an American Citizen to defend his Country, and her Flag, at all times and on all occasions. And having assisted in bearing the Stars and Stripes, through an Enemys country and over a bloody battle feild. I now offer you as the Executive of my state whatever of efficiency or experience I may have left, and hold myself in readiness to March at any moment if my services are accepted. Absence from home until this day must excuse the delay in this communication
