Hon Richd Yates

Dear Sir

In the present excited state of the Public mind, knowing how entirely you must be engaged in matters of the most serious moment, I feel somewhat reluctant, to call your attention to a matter so trivial, as will the one I present, appear. But as it is one to us, living in this town of considerable importance, and as I have no other source than yourself by which I can reach the point, not being acquainted in the proper direction in this State, presuming upon our long and familiar acquaintance, I have determined to write you -

There is an effort being made here, to oust our present P.M., and substitute a Breckenridge Secessionist. I say what I know - [Beeding?] the present occupant was an old line Whig but at the last Presidential election voted for Douglass and is every way competent and acceptable to the community and could not be ousted if left to the vote of the Town & neighborhood - The man proposed to fill his place, [name] is a young man and cast his first Presidential vote, last election & for Breckenridge and is still of that party

We are all Union men in this Place with but few exceptions, and if I can accomplish it will ever be so. The Stars & Strips still wave above our village heralding our views to all who sail upon Missouri's muddy stream, altho Secession stalks abroad, and we would be much chagrined if having fought secession so long and so successfully, we should now have hoisted upon us as P.M. a man entertaining such views -

The P.O. is worth nothing & the incumbent does not want it, but still does not like to give it up when the community wish him to keep it and when the opposition to him is altogether personal; and of this I am satisfied - Now my Dear Sir if you can aid us in this, and prevent this removal and I know you can, you will add another to the many obligations I am under to you

Yours

R. [Wick.?] Price

P.S

You must act instantly, for application for removal thro some one has been made
