Richard Yates Sr. (1815-1873) was governor of Illinois (1861-1865) and U.S. Senator from the state (1865-1871).

Correspondence, speeches, scrapbooks, letterpress books, miscellaneous documents, and newspaper clippings, primarily 1834-1869. Material mainly relates to Yates’s tenures as governor and U.S. Senator, with a few pre-Civil War business papers. Also includes biographies of Yates written by Richard Yates Jr. and Winfred A. Harbison, as well as a little undated post-Civil War correspondence from Dorothea Dix.

Collection referred to as “Wabash Yates” to distinguish it from the Yates Family Papers.
