Description

The Illinois State Memorial at the Vicksburg National Military Park honors the 36,325 Illinois soldiers who served in the Vicksburg campaign. A Springfield, Illinois, construction, company, Culver Marble and Stone Company, built the memorial, which was dedicated on October 6, 1906. Architect William Le Baron Jenney, who designed the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, the world's first skyscraper, based the design of the memorial on the Pantheon in Rome. Standing sixty-two feet in height and approached by forty-seven steps, each representing a day in the siege of Vicksburg, the Illinois Memorial is the largest monument in the park.

The photographs in the Vicksburg Collection illustrate the construction of the Illinois Memorial.
