Description

The Ragen Collection features images of Joseph Ragen in his professional life. Ragen began his career as a prison warden in 1931 at the Menard County Prison. He served as the warden of the Illinois State Penitentiary in Joliet, Illinois, from 1935-1961. Ragan became the Director of the Illinois Department of Public Safety in 1961, serving in this position until his resignation in 1965. During his career, Ragen advised 24 governors throughout the United States on their penal system and served as the president of the Wardens Association of America and the American Correctional Association.
