Description
Carl Sandburg was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and poet from Illinois. Born in Galesburg, Sandburg attended school until the age of 13 when he left to work several jobs to help his family. In his late teens Sandburg served in the United States Army during the Spanish-American War. After leaving the military Sandburg enrolled at Lombard College however he left the school before finishing his degree.
Sandburg worked as a newspaper writer in Milwaukee and Chicago. He began publishing his poetry in Poetry: A Magazine of Verse before publishing his first book of poetry, Chicago Poems, in 1916. Sandburg received his first Pulitzer Prize for Cornhuskers in 1918. During the 1920s Sandburg began writing a six volume biography of Abraham Lincoln, receiving his second Pulitzer Prize in 1939 for the second part of the work. He received his third, and final, Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for Complete Poems.
