The Carter Family Collection contains photographs donated by Lois M. Johnston of William Price Carter and Martha Mayes Carter and their children. Joesph Newton Carter, their fourth child, served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1878 unti 1882. He won election to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1894 making him the youngest member elected to the court. Carter servd as the Chief Justice from 1898-1899.
