Avery was a clerk in the employ of this company when our President made his call for 600.000 men = His pay was $55. per month &amp;amp; he was in the line of promotion and would by this time probably have received a Salary of $800. or $900 per year had he remained with us =
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;He left us and volunteered as a private in the Board of Trade Battery - from which he has been detached as Private Secretary to Maj Genl Rosecrans 
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As chairman of the Railroad Committee of this city for the 89th Regt Ill Vol I have had occasion to correspond with many officers of the Army of the Cumberland &amp;amp; have thus learned that Mr Avery has been recommended to your Excellency for a commission as Lieutenant and knowing his 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt; ability, and integrity I cannot refrain from adding my testimony in his behalf and expressing the belief that if you can consistently give him the appointment, it will meet the approval of our entire Railroad Community, with whom his many good qualities have made him a general favorite
&lt;p&gt;I believe that as an Officer he will continue to do his Country faithful Service &amp;amp; prove an honor to the Army and the Loyal State of Illinois

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In reply I have to say that the man Shields must have made an untrue Statement to you or to his Sister as he is perfectly well &amp;amp; has been so for some time
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I would take pleasure however in complying with your request but for the fact that he is confinement &amp;amp; awaiting his trial before a military 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;commission for assault with intent to kill upon the person of a fellow teamster some weeks ago. It seems that in a quarrel he struck the man in the head with a club, injuring him so badly as to cause much doubt of his recovery 
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Upon enquiry I find that Shields is considered a somewhat desparate &amp;amp; dangerous man
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As you take some interest in him I shall endeavor to see that he has a chance to defend himself at the trial &amp;amp; if you desire it, if he is acquitted I will allow him to quit the service

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I would take pleasure however in complying with your request but for the fact that he is confinement &amp;amp; awaiting his trial before a military 
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;commission for assault with intent to kill upon the person of a fellow teamster some weeks ago. It seems that in a quarrel he struck the man in the head with a club, injuring him so badly as to cause much doubt of his recovery 
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Upon enquiry I find that Shields is considered a somewhat desparate &amp;amp; dangerous man
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As you take some interest in him I shall endeavor to see that he has a chance to defend himself at the trial &amp;amp; if you desire it, if he is acquitted I will allow him to quit the service

I done my duty like a good soldier for one year &amp;amp; Resigned on account of sickness from which I am fully recovered &amp;amp; anxious for the field again. I am thowraly Drilled &amp;amp; fully qwellified to fill the Position.

Will you be kind enough to write to Prest Lincoln and ask him to give me this position. I think that I can fill the possition with credit to my friends and to the satisfaction of the Govt. in this region.  I have arrangements made to have two

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dear Sir - I think if you could give J Henry Shaw a place in the army the effect would be beneficial - you are aware that in these trying times it is best to do everything possible to bind and unite men in favor of the government-
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Shaw has been entirely sober and has conducted himself well for sometime, he is a man of the best talent in Cass County - and is loyal - but so identified with the democracy here that he don't do any good for the County - now if you could assist him to a place I think his services at home 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt; 
&lt;p&gt;and abroad would be of great benefit - He would make a for better Colonel than Charles Fox - in fact he is that style of man of John A. Logan whatever way he goes - he does his best -
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I wish you could give him a place for I am sure he would do well-
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Cant you write him a letter that would encourage him even a good letter from you would help him and prepare him to defend the conscription act which if necessary to put in force will need all the defence it can get.
