Yates Dear Sir - I think if you could give J Henry Shaw a place in the army the effect would be beneficial - you are aware that in these trying times it is best to do everything possible to bind and unite men in favor of the government- Shaw has been entirely sober and has conducted himself well for sometime, he is a man of the best talent in Cass County - and is loyal - but so identified with the democracy here that he don't do any good for the County - now if you could assist him to a place I think his services at home <hr /> and abroad would be of great benefit - He would make a for better Colonel than Charles Fox - in fact he is that style of man of John A. Logan whatever way he goes - he does his best - I wish you could give him a place for I am sure he would do well- Cant you write him a letter that would encourage him even a good letter from you would help him and prepare him to defend the conscription act which if necessary to put in force will need all the defence it can get.
