Murfreesboro March 19th 1863 My Dear Governor A few day since I received through the politeness of Mr. Hishbach a copy of your very kind letter to Mr. Lincoln in my behalf. Beyond a discharge of the duties devolving upon me as commander of the 84th Ills to the best of my abilities, I have made no efforts for promotion and shall make none. Such a letter however from so good a Governor of so great a state let me assure you is very gratifying. Aside from a desire to contribute something towards crushing the Rebellion I was am bitious that the 84th should win something more than a mere place among the many Regiments sent by our gallant State into the field. Proud of the patient <hr /> endurance of our brave boys on the march through Kentucky and Tennessee and of their gallantry in the Battle before Murfreesboro I could not with any heart even hope for a promotion that might separate us now.
