I have been appointed by Maj. Gen. John A. Logan Sanitary Agent for the 3d Division. I am now in Memphis by his Order, approved by Maj. Gen McPherson, looking after "Sanitaries." By procuring a liberal supply of these things, the health of my Reg - the 81st Ill - & indeed that of the whole Division is greatly improved. of the very noblest patriots in this mighty nation. Future generations will rank your name on the brighest pages of our country's history in this grand & awful time. In conclusion, Sir, permit me to ask you to remember especially the 3d Division - Gen. John A. Logan's - in the bestowal of your Sanitary favors.

The health of the men in the Army has never been so good as at present, & their
spirits never so buoyant since we entered the Service of our country to fight.

Disaffection, you are well aware, Sir, is being banished from the ranks of our Soldiers, & a high-souled & lofty patriotism animates the breasts of the noble Sons of the North West to do or to die for our beloved land & her cherished institutions. The Policy of the Administration with regard to the "Contrabands" is universally approved & the patriotic & earnest Governor of Illinois - the idol of the Soldiers & the pride of the State - is given great credit & praise for doing a vast deal to bring about the present condition of affairs. No two men stand higher to day in the estimation of our Soldiers than your Excellency & the Governor of

of the very noblest patriots in this mighty nation. Future generations will rank your name on the brighest pages of our country's history in this grand & awful time. In conclusion, Sir, permit me to ask you to remember especially the 3d Division - Gen. John A. Logan's - in the bestowal of your Sanitary favors.

It was arranged with Genl Leery when he was paroled, that Lieut Witt & companions should be sent back in return for the kindness thus shown by the 4th Ill.

Sir: I am in Washington and have incidentally learned that you have been notified of the decission of the War Department in re my application for restoration to the service and that the decission is adverse to my prayer, because the vacancy caused by my removal has been filled. If it is consistent with the public interest and you deem it an act of fair justice to myself, my obligations to you would know no bounds if you would commission me in some of the Illinois Regiments. It is excessively annoying to me to me to be stigmatized as unfit for the position I held and as the stain attaches to me not only for a day but for life I hold it as of the first importance to me to be restored to a command equal to that from which I have been hurled by the false representations of malicious persons

Dear Sir.

With much feeling and interest, I attempt the priviledge of addressing a few lines to you soliciting your aid in behalf of my son Wm. D. Forbes, a member of Co G. 75th Regt I. V. M. who has been sick and in the Hospital nearly all the time since the Battle at Perrysville Ky. he was in hospital at New Albany Ind. until the latter part of February at which time he was moved to the camp near Murphresboro Tenn. at which place he is now at. I. Y. Finley is the Post Surgeon of the Hospital, I had two sons in the same company, the eldest was killed in the battle at Perrysville, and as the other has been sick ever since

nearly, with the Diarrhe, Rheumatism and cough, and his officer thinks he will never be fit for service again, and if such is the fact I would like to have him at home, not to linger out his life in Hospital, when if at home he might partially recover.

I have written these few lines giving you the facts of the case as I understand them, and not deeming it necessary to write more.

Hoping if it is in your power to render him any assistince that you will grant him the favour.
