I know yours is valuable time and I will be as concise as the case will admit of. I know to the deception used often by officious pleaders for official favors.  This is an honest appeal to your humanity, and a line to the Physician in question will verify my Statements.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The individual in question is an Illinoisian by name John New, and a young man He is a member of Col Farnsworths 8th Ills Cavaly Regt;  having enlisted 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt; at the formation of the Regt. Naturally delicate the Service has entirely prostrated his energies and has been confined in the Calvert St Hospital, Baltimore since the 6. Sept. 1862.
&lt;p&gt;The Physiciasn tell him they can do nothing for him.  in any shape or manner and being continually losing, he has written to you a few days ago asking for his discharge if it can be had.  fore some unaccountable reason he cannot get it where he is.  [Nonfit?] for service a burden to the government he feels entitled to relief.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I believe you have the power, if you would, procure his discharge if possible, or at least grant him a transfer to

In Oct last I left Camp Duncan to take the field against the Enemy.  leaving my Wife and five Children in the Care of one that I supposed would see that she was taken care of and have a home in my absence.  but I find I was mistaken she is turned out of a home with nothing But my wages for a support which is a sergents $17. per month.  and that is uncertain about reaching her when I forward  it.  I mailed her 4 months wages which she failed to get, she is on the charity of the town and in a situation that needs care it has bourn on my find so that I Appeal to you for your influance

&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have just recd a note from Capt. McMaster of Mo. Vols. 31st Regt, who has recently returned from a rebel prison. He requests me to urge you to use your influence to have the exchange of prisoners hastened.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;He comes from Jackson, Miss. where (in prison) he became acquainted with my brother-in-law Lieut Jos. E. Witt, 4th Ills. Cavalry, who with other brave officers is pining in squalor &amp;amp; starvation, amid filth &amp;amp; vermin too horrible to reflect upon with any thing like patience, when it is known they have suffered this since Jany. last. The Capt.
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr /&gt;
&lt;p&gt;thinks humanity calls for prompter action on the part of the Govt., &amp;amp; I must say the Capt. is not alone in this opinion.
&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Knowing your interest in all who act and suffer for our common country, I take this liberty, hoping you may  be able to urge forward the exchange of these suffering &amp;amp; abused officers.  It was arranged with Genl Leery when he was paroled, that Lieut Witt &amp;amp; companions should be sent back in return for the kindness thus shown by the 4th Ill. Cavalry to the Genl. &amp;amp; his fellow prisoners; but alas! they are still in prison, starving, rotting, dying!
