The Plant is known scientifically as the "OEnothera biennis" - Its most common name is "Scabish". it is of general distribution - growing abundantly in all sections of the Country. It is pleasant to the taste. In its operation, it is soothing - Strengthening and health restoring. I am a civil Engineer by Profession, and have been engaged in the construction of Public Works, a large portion of the time since 1833. I have scarse known <hr /> a case of cholera morbus - Dysentery - Sun Stroke Diorrhaea or Flux, occurring on our works, that would not yield to this remedy - and this too, in the seasons when the cholera prevailed - I have brought this Plant to the attention of many Physicians who have adopted it in their practice - But as it has not become officinal, it is not to be procured of the apothecaries, and is as yet comparitively little known. Yet it might be supplyed by the aid of the sanitary Commission - or it might be obtained in the vicinity of the Hospitals by the properly instructed attendants, who could readily learn to distinguish the growing Plant. I might refer Your Excellency to Brig. Genl. M. Brayman of Springfield To Col R B. Chicago, July 1st 1863 Governor, A number of true and loyal union men, have formed an organization, under the name of the "Strong Band", the chief object of which is to sustain the Government in putting down the present infamous rebellion. This organization has extended its ramifications through, or into, most of the loyal states, and already numbers many thousand officers and privates in this, and other states; and is strictly military in its character. It has conferred on me the position of Commander in Chief; and my great object is to render it actively efficient in the present aspect of the affairs of our country. I have been in the Service but was discharged on account of my health at that time. My health is good now and I am anxious to serve my Country either in the Invalid Corps or in Volunteer service to repel invasion as a Commissioned Officer in either service. I think my previous Service as 1st Serg. in the Company being well acquainted with Military tactics entitles me to a more important position. The disease I was afflicted with is liable to return from exposure. But I apprehend no danger in attending to the duties of Capt. or Lieutenant. If you think proper to appoint me an Officer in Invalid Company I will respond to the call at any time.
