I am a widow with eight children six of whom are now with me, and five are small, the eldest of the five is 13 years old, the youngest two and and a half. The oldest one with me is James the son before mentioned, he enlisted about a year ago (against my will being under age) in Co. C 118th Ill Volunteers and during the siege at Vicksburg while out skirmishing he with the others were taken prisoners and taken round to Richmond and Annapolis [illegible] where they were parolled <hr /> and sent home and he is now in daily expectation of being exchanged and called back to his Reg. He has been very anxious to join his Reg but still feels that it is his duty to stay with his mother . On serious objection I had to his joining the army was his health, which is not improved and then I am getting to be advanced in years. I am 46 years old with poor health and small means I am renting a farm which I shall be unable to carry on without my sons assistance. My oldest son has been in the service over two years. He enlisted early in the rebellion. I yielded him up sorrowfully yet willingly mingled with a felling of pride that I could make so great a sacrifice to in so noble a cause. I still had a son left to assist me in support of my family, and I felt that it was his (my eldest son's) duty to respond to his country's call. But I cannot feel so with regard to my second son going for he is my main dependence. And now though you may not have the authority to grant his discharge, yet if you will use your influence to obtain it for him - my son, James H. Yates: Your Excellency will pardon me for intruding upon your notice at a time when so many pressing calls occupy your attention in every direction, and believe me, nothing but the belief that your sanction and recommendation would be of incalculable service would have led me to address you at this time. But your expressed interest in the cause of general emancipation has led me to hope that you would look with favor upon the measures proposed. The Women's Loyal National League whose center is in N. York City have <hr /> decided upon canvassing the Northern States and obtaining signatures to petitions asking for general emancipation as a means of national safety and universal human interest They wish me to canvass this State and if practicable to do something in Kentucky and Missouri. Sept 9th 63 His Excellency Richard Yates Springfield I hope you will pardon the intrusion of this second letter as I would not under ordinary circumstances adress your Excellency at this time and upon the same subject broached in my former letter Without further preliminaries I will say I want a commission either at this Post or at some other in the State or in my own Reg. (78th Ill) The Post Adjts position and Ordnance Sergeant are both vacant at this place either of which would be acceptable the former being filled by commission from the Gov I do not ask this undeservedly. I have lost my all in this war in helping to get men into the service. and would <hr />have been myself at the commencement but could not on account of an aged invalid Mother to whom I pledged support as long as she lived; that pledge has been fulfilled and at the consumation I was a volunteer, I had a Captains Commission made out which lies in the Adjutants office at this time. The Gen Government spends Hundreds of dollars upon worthless officers; which of course is one of the evills of the this war and to some extent unavoidable, All I ask is some situation that will in part recompense me for losses I have sustained while most of the citizens of our noble State have been benefitted by the war I for one have been ruined. How this has been done it is not necessary here for me to state -- I have a family of small children to support and am compelled to use every honerable means in my power to help provide for them Should your Excellency deign to extend <hr /> the hand of relief to a Brother in need the kindness will be duly appreciated & Gratfuly remembered by your humble servant.
