How this has been done it is not necessary here for me to state -- I have a family of small children to support and am compelled to use every honerable means in my power to help provide for them

Dear Sir. I saw Genl Pope on Saturday last. While he professes to be very anxious that some Illinoisan should be on Fremont's staff, he admitted that he had never mentioned the matter to Fremont. There is but one way to get the matter effected and that is for you to see Fremont. If the President will make me Ass. Adj. Gen. with the Rank and pay of Col. I will take the place, if you can find no person better qualified. If Fremont requests this of the President, and you do also ask it, he will do it. It is nothing to me, but I will serve, if this opportunity is given to me.

I have many applications to join my Regiment, but I take no companies unless I am satisfied that they are good ones. Col. Engleman is now on a tour of examination, so as not to be imposed upon,. I hope to form a Regiment “as is a regiment,” but it will take some time.

We have a gentleman here, Fred. Von Schrader, a man of great property, brother in law of Breese, and the Morrisons, who has been a Cavalry officer, in the Prussian service, and is now Capt. of our homeguard cavalry. He seems to understand his business remarkably well. He was a strong Douglas Democrat, (in the Morrison interest, for he is not a politician.)

and his women folks are almost secessionists, though he is a warm Union man now. He would make a splendid Col. He has a large business here (Distilling) but I presume he would, if called upon, give his services to the Country.

He is a perfect model of a Gentleman has nephews in the regular army, and is very intelligent.

He has been [opposing?] me bitterly in fatalities, and I have no motive in recommending him, except the good of the State, as he is an accomplished cavalry officer.
He has been in the County some twenty five years, and is perfectly familiar with the Country.

                    <text>
Hamilton Sept 15th / 63

Hon Gov Yates

Sir

Duty to myself and family prompts me to solicit your aid in getting my second son discharged from the service of the United States.

I am a widow with eight children six of whom are now with me, and five are small, the eldest of the five is 13 years old, the youngest two and and a half. The oldest one with me is James the son before mentioned, he enlisted about a year ago (against my will being under age) in Co. C 118th Ill Volunteers and during the siege at Vicksburg while out skirmishing he with the others were taken prisoners and taken round to Richmond and Annapolis [illegible] where they were parolled

and sent home and he is now in daily expectation of being exchanged and called back to his Reg. He has been very anxious to join his Reg but still feels that it is his duty to stay with his mother . On serious objection I had to his joining the army was his health, which is not improved and then I am getting to be advanced in years. I am 46 years old with poor health and small means I am renting a farm which I shall be unable to carry on without my sons assistance.

My oldest son has been in the service over two years. He enlisted early in the rebellion. I yielded him up sorrowfully yet willingly mingled with a felling of pride that I could make so great a sacrifice to in so noble a cause. I still had a son left to assist me in support of my family, and I felt that it was his (my eldest son's) duty to respond to his country's call. But I cannot feel so with regard to my second son going for he is my main dependence. And now though you may not have the authority to grant his discharge, yet if you will use your influence to obtain it for him - my son, James H. Greene is his name, you will confer a lasting favor upon his mother

Mrs Harriet Greene
