My husband is a Soldier in the service of Uncle Sam. he volenteered as a Private in the 127 Regiment Illinois Volenteers he went through all the hardships of the first attack of Vicksburg and so on until the first Charge on Vicksburg the 19 of May May, he was wounded at the time so many of his Brave comrads fell he laid in Hospital near Vicksburg until the 22 of July he then had a sick furlough for 30 days. he came hom his furlough run nearly out he had it extended he was out of money he had not received any since last February, he could not draw any here unless he went into Hospital <hr /> he went in the Hospital at Camp Douglas. they will not allow the Convalesent Solders to go out side of the Camp. neither will they let me in the Hospital to see him, they will not give him a pass to come home to see to his business, he is failing very fast if has got to stay there he will not live long. if he could have a furlough to come home so I could take care of him I think he would get better, then he would be of some service to the Government. his officers say he has always done his duty like a brave and honest man I have a family of four little Children that need a Fathers care, I appeal to your noble Heart for a hearing in this case: I think there might be something done to get him out <hr /> for a man to be kept in such a place as Camp Douglas to die for the want of care and the comforts of life only 16 miles from home is rather more than I know how to get along with I hope you will not feel insulted because I have taken the liberty to address you, it is a serious subject if you can assist me in any way to get my Husband home to save his life you will bestow a favor on us that I shall always be grateful for. I hope you have recieved the letter by this time and in five days more I hope to hear from you I am still getting better I believe But the livering we get here will not strengthen any one very fast We have two small pieces of Bread and a cup of coffee or tea and sometime a very small piece of Boiled beef and at other times a Spoonfull of molasses in place of beef <hr /> 2 I will tell you a shame-full fact. I see men every meel with their bodies pierced in every discription with balls that have been faithful Soldiers over two years beg for more bread or any thing to satisfy their honger and they can have no more. The question is ast a 100 times every meal won't you give a piece of bread and the answer is no.. All this is not the fault of the government but it is these paper collared villains that are getting rich out of those that have no more power than a dog to get their rights <hr /> 3 I should think nothing of it if we were in a place (as I have been) where it could not be had. But here there is great abundance of rations and the only fault lies in these Hospital villains that get banded together to rob the sick and wounded. I have money and can send out and get butter at [40?] cts a pound and can get along better than most here as but very few have any money.
