Marsh of the 12th Ill Cav. Capt Marsh carries a right arm by his side nearly palsied or rendered useless by a wound received during that ever to be remembered raid of Gen Stoneman on Richmond in May / 63. The Capt is anxious yet to do all he can towards “putting down this Rebellion” & would still lead his Company in battle although unable to defend himself. Were it not for Rheumatic difficulties that seem to have taken possession of his system, ocasioned undoubtedly from long exposure, he thinks that he may be more useful to the Govt if employed in some detached service. You may be shure Dear Sir that I feel an increased pride at all your successes, claiming as I do to be the first man in the State that named you as their first choice for Governor. The political campain of 1860 was the most glorious one I ever expect to take part in. & the most disastrous to me starting out as I did spending large amounts of money thinking I might get the post office here the canal collectorship or something by which I would be compensated financially, but when the time came there was so many <hr /> wanted the loaves & fishes so much worse than I did that I stood back & saw those that done the least compensated by all that was worth haveing. then came the war I being a cripple could not volunteer & knowing nothing about military affairs did not think my self competent to fill any situation in that department. Then came the needs of the Soldiers which continues up to this time & I have divided my means with them till I am poor. I would be very thankful if I could get some situation civil or military by which I could recruit my finances a little. not haveing a relation in the country & but few influencial acquaintences.
