On the principle that the continuous falling of small drops wear away a rock, I am thumping away with my small mallet of influence and driving in a wedge here and there, where I know they will tell in your behalf. I do sincerely hope that your success does in no degree depend upon the elevation of J.K. Dubois to the Gubernatorial chain. He is no friend of yours, whatever he may pretend to be. You can sail without him I am sure. But, if the “Wires” are so arranged, that to pull against him, will unfavorably affect you, I may, though I can see no virtue in him, relax my grief enough to let him work out his own salvation with fear and trembling, if he is not entirely God-forsaken! My dislike for him is not personal, he has always treated me as well as <hr /> [illegible] nature and habits would permit, but it is, because I believe him void of principle. If he could be unfriendly to Gov. Wood, for whom he made such loud professions of friendship, he is capable of betraying you or any one else to enhance his own sinister purposes or for his own personal aggrandizement. Would like you to post me a little with regard to your relations to him in the coming contest. Of course you will be, beyond peradventure, the candidate for the Senate. I have never thought of anything else. You can have no successful opposition. Trumbull is ausgespielt; who else then, but the man who has done so much for the glory of Illinois, and, withal, made the Colonel that made the greatest General now living! Shall be our U.S. Senator! Yates Sir - At a late hour of the might of the 22nd inst. a magistrate of Jersey Co. named Robert Smith reported to me that a party of Bushwhackers had crossed from MO and were attacking the lives (of) and property of citizens in Jersey some eight miles from here up the River. I sent a party of soldiers to arrest them at the request of the magistrate - the constable who accompanied him and of Mr. M'Pike - belonging to the Provost Marshal's office here. In arriving at the place pointed out they ransacked the house found no one but a man secreted in a cellar. When endeavouring to arrest him he discharged a revolver at the party, which resulted in wounding the constable (supposed mortally) & a soldier (slightly). He in turn was shot through the bowels & is now in my regimental hospital & as my surgeon states will probably recover. This evening one of my officers in a visit to the same neighourhood found a secession flag openly flying before a house - which he brought in with him. As the [upins ?] in question is really out of my jursidiction, I mention these back to you that you may direct such action upon the part of the civil authorities as to you may deem fit - and if desired by the proper Military commander will furnish ample assistance from my command to obtain the due execution of their duty.
