</p><p>To your Excellency, I, a humble woman of this our noble state of Ills. appeal for assistance.
</p><p>The constant and fatherly interest manifested by you, in all, even the humblest of our soldiers has emboldened me to take this step.
</p><p>I am as I suppose, the widow of an Ills. soldier; My husband, Thos J. Ames of Fremont, Lake Co., enlisted in the 51st Regt. Ills. Vol. Inft. in Sept 1861, and served the most of the time in the capacity of Sergt. in Co. G. At Chickamauga Sept. 20 he fell, fighting bravely to the last. With the exception of pension &c. allowed by Govt. to me, as the childless widow of a volunteer - and which allowance can not of course benefit me for some

<p>time to come, I am entirely dependent upon my own exertions for a livelihood.
</p><p>I desire to obtain a situation as copying clerk in some office, at a fair compensation, and under circumstances such as a woman can accept without doing injustice to herself.

</p><p>Dear Sir: My son Harrison J. Baker enlisted last Oct., as a private in the 89th Ills. Vol. Went into camp at Springfield in Dec. was attacked with Diphtheria. From Springfield he was sent to Tenn. In Feb. I received a letter from an agent of the Christian Commission informing me that my son was very low with Pneumonia, I went after him, and brought him north. He has been at home since that time, untill a few days ago, lungs and heart both troubling him. He was examined at Nashville for a discharge; part of his transportation home was paid at Louisville, to be charged on his discharge papers; since that time we have heard nothing of them. He was examined a few days since in

<p>Chicago, the examining physician said he was not fit for duty, but his best way would be to go to Nashville, and get his discharge from there; and he has gone.
</p><p>Would not a recommendation from you be of great use to him? I know it is a great favor to ask of you. My son I would give if my country's

</p><p>Capt Stevens has served since the beginning of the war, in the 77th, with great credit & honor to himself & beside being a good officer is in every way an Estimable & worthy young man -
</p><p>He is desirous of obtaining some position in one of the hundred day Regts & would like a Lieut Col if it could be had -
</p><p>I am confident Capt Stevens would fill with honor & credit any position to which his military skill entitles him -
</p><p>He is brave honest & deserving

</p><p>Dear Sir. The bearer of this Mr S. M. Drake is the father of Jas. B. Drake a former employe of this Co who enlisted as Private in Co M Chicago Light Artillery in July '62, from which time to the Battle of Chicamauga he was in active service. he was there badly wounded & up to this date and is now in Hospital at Quincy Ill.
</p><p>In the judgment of several Physicians whos testimony Mr Drake presents you herewith. he will

<p>never be allowed to enter active service again. It is his wish to be discharged from the long term of his Enlistment, and enter the One Hundred day service for which he thinks he is able to serve.
</p><p>I have seen Mr J. B. Drake since he was wounded, and from conversation and his general appearance believe the statements made by the different Physicians, hereinbefore referenced [illegible], to be true, and also think that he will be of more service to his country in the position he applies for than laying about the Hospital as he must if not transferred

Drake has a son in the Hospital at Quincy Ill, who is suffering from a Disability occasioned by a would through the thigh recd at the Battle of Checkamauga, and there seems now no prospect of his being able to return to active duty in the field Young Drake was formerly in a good position with good prospects here, & when the call was made in 1862 he promply enlisted without seeking promotion

<p>or any personal advantage he was constantly on duty did Efficient service as the History of the Battery to which he belonged will shew up to the day he was wounded. Since then his health has been poor & has suffered from the Confinemt & unfriendly diet of the Hospital, & wishes to be released from the Army, and have no doubt from Evidence that has come to me that He should be discharged and every assistance or influence that you could render Mr Drake in the case would be appreciated by those acquainted with the case
