Dear Sir, I Your humble servant now petition you to assist me in obtaining my pay from services [rendered the Government as?] or non-commissioned officer in the 77th Regt. of Ill Vol Infantry. I will give you a history of the matter, giving you the particulars as far as I can remember & will if necessary give you Phisicians certifficates confirming the truth of what I say. In the first place I was sworn into the state service on the seventh {7th} day of August 1862 & helped to raise & <hr /> organize a company for the afore said Regt. When the Regt. was fully organised I was chosen to act as Comisary Sergeant & was finally appointed to that place. I filled it until the Seventeenth {17th} of Dec 1862. At which time the Hains. Bluff expedition started from Memphis Tenn. At that time I was sick with Camp Diareah & refused to give up a state [illegible] to a Captain of the Regt. for which I was [illegible ] to the Ranks. I continued to grow worse & did not do much duty till the Sixth of Jan 1863 after which time I was sent north with the Chaplain on sick furlough. The Chaplain soon [recovered?] & returned. When I began to get better of the Diareah I broke out with a skin disease & the Dr was not able to help me. I heard from <hr /> the Regt but once which I promptly answered. Untill Sept 1863 when they wrote me that I was reported as absent without leave. I was then so poorly that I could not return & was not able to undertake the voyage till Nov. 1863. About the middle of the Month I started on my trip south all alone feeling all the time that I was liable to be picked up as a deserter. I reached New Orleans the 1st day of December & reported to the Officer Comanding & was sent to the Convalescent Camp at that time commanded by Maj Peter Davidson of Peoria Ill. Maj of [Maj of Artillery?]. I was there till nearly the close of December, when I was examined by the Surgeon in Charge of Camp & the Medical inspection of the 13th A.G. & was discharged without even reporting to my Regt. by order of Maj Gen Banks. A notice of my <hr /> discharge was at once sent to the Regt & also to the War Department Wash. D.C. The officers have failed to send me a description [ ] & I have written them several times about it. I belonged to Company C of the Regt. Maj Wm. J. The rapid increase of applications to the NEW YORK STATE VOLUNTEER INSTITUTE, and the constant demand upon the public for charities growing out of the war, has induced its Proprietors to adopt such means of raising funds for its maintenance and support as may in a measure relieve those disposed to aid the enterprise, by changing an actual donation to a purchase, which shall at one and the same time be assisting a noble cause, and prove a profitable investment. This Institution was established some fifteen months since, by Mrs. F. LEWELLYN YOUNG, at Suspension Bridge, Niagara County, N. Y., for the purpose of furnishing a home to, and educating, the sons of deceased or disabled Officers and Soldiers, left destitute by the casualties of war, and whose fathers were stricken down in defence of the Union, and if the requisite funds can be obtained it will be made a NATIONAL INSTEAD OF A STATE INSTITUTION. The education imparted at this Institution is of a solid, practical character, and military science and drill constitute an especial feature, fitting the cadets for any position that they may be called upon to fill in after life. That the field of usefulness may be enlarged by accommodating the increasing number of orphan children an appeal is made to the army and the public to aid this noble work of benevolence, and it is believed that such an appeal cannot fail to meet a hearty and generous response from all. No Institution in the country is more richly deserving the sympathy and charity of the public than this, and none is doing more good than this, though yet in its infancy. Every patriotic citizen should feel that in bestowing charity here he is relieving the wants and sufferings of children--the children of those men who faced the enemies of our common country, fought the minions of rebellion, and gave up their lives as a holy sacrifice. Shall it be said that the country was ungrateful for these sacrifices, that the orphan children of our soldiers were neglected and left to want and misery in consequence of the ingratitude of a people for whose freedom their fathers died? <hr /> In order, therefore, to furnish shelter, food, clothing, and a liberal education to these children we propose to ask fifty thousand subscriptions at two dollars each. The rapid increase of applications to the NEW YORK STATE VOLUNTEER INSTITUTE, and the constant demand upon the public for charities growing out of the war, has induced its Proprietors to adopt such means of raising funds for its maintenance and support as may in a measure relieve those disposed to aid the enterprise, by changing an actual donation to a purchase, which shall at one and the same time be assisting a noble cause, and prove a profitable investment. This Institution was established some fifteen months since, by Mrs. F. LEWELLYN YOUNG, at Suspension Bridge, Niagara County, N. Y., for the purpose of furnishing a home to, and educating, the sons of deceased or disabled Officers and Soldiers, left destitute by the casualties of war, and whose fathers were stricken down in defence of the Union, and if the requisite funds can be obtained it will be made a NATIONAL INSTEAD OF A STATE INSTITUTION. The education imparted at this Institution is of a solid, practical character, and military science and drill constitute an especial feature, fitting the cadets for any position that they may be called upon to fill in after life. That the field of usefulness may be enlarged by accommodating the increasing number of orphan children an appeal is made to the army and the public to aid this noble work of benevolence, and it is believed that such an appeal cannot fail to meet a hearty and generous response from all. No Institution in the country is more richly deserving the sympathy and charity of the public than this, and none is doing more good than this, though yet in its infancy. Every patriotic citizen should feel that in bestowing charity here he is relieving the wants and sufferings of children--the children of those men who faced the enemies of our common country, fought the minions of rebellion, and gave up their lives as a holy sacrifice. Shall it be said that the country was ungrateful for these sacrifices, that the orphan children of our soldiers were neglected and left to want and misery in consequence of the ingratitude of a people for whose freedom their fathers died? <hr /> In order, therefore, to furnish shelter, food, clothing, and a liberal education to these children we propose to ask fifty thousand subscriptions at two dollars each.
