Dear Governor.

Yours of_____ was duly received. In accordance with your suggestion I showed it to Mr Medill. He was pleased with it. He says that the opposition wont win, that they cant beat you, and he shall be party to no such undertaking. He says he shall stand aloof from the fight and Keep the Tribune perfectly neutral; that his preferences are with you, and that he hopes you may succeed, and thinks you will when the time of election comes. I learn (not from him) that parties in Washburne's interest have asked that the columns of the Tribune be thrown open to them, for the publication of affidavits affecting your character for sobriety etc. and that Mr Medill refused to accede to the demand. He would have nothing to do with attacks upon you. It was said to Medill that you were "drunk" at Fulton, and that affidavits could be provided to that effect. I told M. that it was a d__d lie, and that I was willing to make affidavit to the fact that you left Fulton sober etc.

As you say in yours, the matter looks all right now. It is generally conceded even

Dear Sir,

My attention having frequently been called to the condition of things at Paducah, KY and the restrictions on trade with this place calls upon me to [detale?] [certain?] facts to you and our [horse? ] trade has been opened up in Paducah to settle Merchants since Comd. Parre left there and they are having the [ ] matter just as they want to hide certain restrictions have been held over all the Merchants at this place and recently Genl. Comd. Parre did more for our county and that of his Districts in KY while he was there than all the commanders that [ ] was there and to my satisfaction and all the loyal men was [ ] and just and did nothing that any loyal man could complain of but was feared by the robbers and copperhead even in Metropolis and I am sorrow to say that kind Merideth is just the opposite

There is [agreed ] anxiety on the part of many of the citizens of this place to have a post established here which may have a good attendance and would pay its own expenses no doubt by [ ] good that might be captured there is person hear that could attend to the command without quitting their business as it would be a small matter. hoping to hear from you on this subject [ ] I am your most obedient servant, A. W. Neely.

Sigmund, U.S. Vols., Medical Executive Officer, endorsed by Dr. Jas. C. Whitehill, Surgeon U.S. Vols, in Charge of Post, who had the kindness to most favorably recommending my case to you. I renewed my application on the 19th ult, and had the duplicate of the same most favorably endorsed by the Surgeons above mentioned, also by Caps. [Sponable?], Inspector-Gen'l prisoners; but Lieut. Col. Skinner, Commissary of prisoners, being still absent, the original Rolls of applicants for Oath have not been forwarded, as yet, to Washington, and consequently I was not permitted to forward to you the above mentioned duplicate. Should Col. Skinner arrive and forward the Orig'l Rolls before your departure, I will sent the duplicate also. But having at different times made applications, I presume you will have no difficulty in obtaining my release. Please Sir, do all you can for me. I anticipate the most favorable results from your personal intercession. May God crown your efforts with success is the prayer of

Sir:

I embrace this opportunity and most respectfully address you with a few lines. Enclosed you will find a recommendation of Surgeon A. M.

Your most grateful servant
