[Vet.?] Vol. was severely wounded, in the gallant defense of Allatoona Ga. on the 5th day of October 1864, and is now in Ward E., Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis Mo.

I think I can answer your request in no better way, than by sending you a copy of the forthcoming Report of the Trustees of the Hospital, which is just now going to press. It will be mailed with this.

The prosperity of the Hospital for eight years is due to the efforts of a set of gentlemen, of unquestionable integrity and entire singleness of purpose, who have served as its Trustees. In their Report they have seen fit to pay me some compliments, which candor compels me to say are mainly due to themselves. In assuming charge of the Hospital, ten years ago, I did it with a full determination that it should rank the first of its kind west of the Alleghenies. Since the retirement

of those members of the Board who owed their appointments to Gov. Matteson, I have always been so fully sustained by those under whom I have acted, that it would have been my own fault if this determination had proved a failure.

We only lack, the completion of the Hospital, to make it a model of such excellence as may gratify the pride of every citizen of Illinois.

With very high sentiments of respect and friendship, I continue to be:

                                                                  Very Truly yours,

His Ex Richd Yates

Gov &c

Springfield

Dear Sir, I drew today a Protest
at the request of our Merchants, to an order
or Circular, issued by Genl Meridith Commandg
at Paducah. I know the facts as stated in
the Protest to be true. Genl Meridieth has
acted on false information, at the beginning
of the War a Permit Officer, appointed by
the Treasury Dept, with authority to grant
Permitts, was stationed at Metropolis, who
was governed by the Military authorities at
Cairo, this Officer has for some reason unknown
to the Merchants here been abolished. They
simply ask that that office be again renewed
and some one be put in it with authority
similar to that at Paducah by which parties
may be permitted to trade at Metropolis if
they desire to do so. Genl Meridith has
refused to grant this, which I think is
very unjust to our Merchants who are all
Loyal men, while the converce is the fact
of the Merchants of Paducah.

The Paducah Merchant would like

all the trade to we confirmed to that Place and they have either deceived the Comanding officer there, to doing so as interested
him, to do so. Merchants there have no
doubt represented to him that a large
trade in (Contraband of War) is being
prosecuted at this place. Genl Meredith
immediately waxed [roth?] and orders all
Skiffs Ferry Boats and other small craft in
or about Metropolis to be totally demolished,
our Citizens being loyal, have bore, all these
things from this old imbecile, who is
hardy a fair excuse for a man much
less Genl until it is now allmost
unbearable, and let me say in this
connection that I do not believe that there
is a man, woman or child in this
town, that is not more legal that Genl
Meridith, for I am told by truthful
men who are loyal at Paducah that
no favors are shown by him at Paducah
to any other that Rebells, and some
of this I have wittnessed myself I
have no quarrel with Meredith and
do not feel personally agrieved by
any act of his towards me, but I
rather like Genl Paine policy for
Paducah better than his thinck it

was more sensible & Just and from what I can see and learn thinck it was more honest. I shall try to
be in Springfield this winter, hoping
and believing that you with interest
yourself for our Merchants I ask
with much respect

Your friend

& Obd Servant

W. R. Brown

Brown W. R.

Metropolis Dec 15 - 64

He sends a Protest
from the Merchants
of Metropolis against
an order issued by
Brig. Genl. Meredith
of Paducah. At the
commencement of
the War they had a
regularly appointed Permit
Officer there but he has
recently been removed.
They request that he be
renewed & the infringement in their Trade
stopped &c. - Believes Genl
Meredith is less loyal than
the Merchants.

His Ex Richd Yates

Gov &c

Springfield

Dear Sir, I drew today a Protest
at the request of our Merchants, to an order
or Circular, issued by Genl Meridith Commandg
at Paducah. I know the facts as stated in
the Protest to be true. Genl Meridieth has
acted on false information, at the beginning
of the War a Permit Officer, appointed by
the Treasury Dept, with authority to grant
Permitts, was stationed at Metropolis, who
was governed by the Military authorities at
Cairo, this Officer has for some reason unknown
to the Merchants here been abolished. They
simply ask that that office be again renewed
and some one be put in it with authority
similar to that at Paducah by which parties
may be permitted to trade at Metropolis if
they desire to do so. Genl Meridith has
refused to grant this, which I think is
very unjust to our Merchants who are all
Loyal men, while the converce is the fact
of the Merchants of Paducah.

The Paducah Merchant would like

all the trade to we confirmed to that Place and they have either deceived the Comanding officer there, to doing so as interested
him, to do so. Merchants there have no
doubt represented to him that a large
trade in (Contraband of War) is being
prosecuted at this place. Genl Meredith
immediately waxed [roth?] and orders all
Skiffs Ferry Boats and other small craft in
or about Metropolis to be totally demolished,
our Citizens being loyal, have bore, all these
things from this old imbecile, who is
hardy a fair excuse for a man much
less Genl until it is now allmost
unbearable, and let me say in this
connection that I do not believe that there
is a man, woman or child in this
town, that is not more legal that Genl
Meridith, for I am told by truthful
men who are loyal at Paducah that
no favors are shown by him at Paducah
to any other that Rebells, and some
of this I have wittnessed myself I
have no quarrel with Meredith and
do not feel personally agrieved by
any act of his towards me, but I
rather like Genl Paine policy for
Paducah better than his thinck it

was more sensible & Just and from what I can see and learn thinck it was more honest. I shall try to
be in Springfield this winter, hoping
and believing that you with interest
yourself for our Merchants I ask
with much respect

Your friend

& Obd Servant

Brown W. R.

Metropolis Dec 15 - 64

He sends a Protest
from the Merchants
of Metropolis against
an order issued by
Brig. Genl. Meredith
of Paducah. At the
commencement of
the War they had a
regularly appointed Permit
Officer there but he has
recently been removed.
They request that he be
renewed & the infringement in their Trade
stopped &c. - Believes Genl
Meredith is less loyal than
the Merchants.

Dear Sir

I am one of your greatest admirers and am very anxious that you should obtain the Senatorship in the (place?) of the present incumbent from information through other sources I regret to learn that like many others of our greatest men you are adicted to intemperance if so I Know how to feel for you, I had to adopt total abstinence in 1816 to avoid the temptations offered me in every house as I was visiting the sick from house to house, and thereby escaped_. Seeing the evils of the habit in one of my pasients I adapted the total abstinence pledge over 30 years since

and have succeeded in raising a family of 7 children who none of them hardly know how liquor of any kind tastes Not so with my brothers three of whom are occupiing drunKards graves and the fourth tottering on the brink of the fourth grave with no hope of reform

Now my dear friend I write this to you as a sincere and earnest admirer of your worth and talent to entreat you to adopt the only recourse which is safe Total Abstinancy which is the only recourse of safety and then I have fears that in some unfortunate moment you may be tempted to break through on even your resolutien and fall as one of my three brothers

did after seven years total abstinanance & continued to drink until his death, so with many others My experience of more than 70 years is that only with the help of the grace of god will any man be able to Keep the Pledge unto the end. In the office which you seek and to which you will in all probability be elected you do need divine wisdom to direct you and for the world to come if not already a true Disiple of our Lord Jesus I do entreat you seek his forgiveness and aid, for he has promised his grace shall be suffitient for all who put their trust in him.

My dear friend I have written the within to you not as an enemy- but for your good and the good of my State as well as your own personal honor and eternal wellfare if you take offence at what I have written I pray you to forgive me, for if I Know my own heart I am your Sincere friend and well wisher

                         Truly yours

Takes great interest in your welfare &c would like to see you succeed in your aspirations for Senatorship- Alludes to habit of drinking- Had three Bro's who filled Drunkard's graves & an another who trembles on the brink_ The best way is to adopt the Total Abstinance rule & live up to doctrines taught by scripture and follow the meek and lowly savior &c

A good deal about nothing

                         Truly yours

your letter gives me great relief of mind. I am now sorry that I had not canvassed this question with you before. But I never could bring myself to write to you plainly on so very delicate and personal a subject and would not have said what I did, had not you opened the topic so unreservedly. I must say in justice to your opponents that I never heard either of them speak disrespectfully of you or make any charge of inebriation. All that W. said to me was that the North and of the State was entitled to the senatorship.

My private opinion is, that W. is playing for Trumbull's place – that he will take his chances now; but if he fails, he will have his name so prominently connected with the senatorship as to be an available candidate two years hence. I think that Palmer is really more formidable than W. this winter.

As to the action of the State Convention, what I stated was the prevailing opinion among all whom I heard talking of it. The private arrangement you speak of, I knew not of. I recollect however that a resolution was handed into the committee on Resolutions, and unanimously [laid over?]. It recommended you for Senator.

Mr. Bross & myself yesterday instructed Mr. White to preserve neutrality on the senatorship, in the columns of the Tribune – this was before your letter came to hand. We must however insert an item from a Carlinville paper in favor of Palmer, having copied articles from the St Louis Dem for you and from a Rockford paper for W. The position of the Tribune as between the candidates was fully [described?] in our editorial this morning & I think no one can take offense at it.

Governor: -

Having been, on the 1st Inst, ordered here from the Army in Kentucky, it is with profound regret that I observe, in common with other Illinois Officers and soldiers, a great Effort being made by public Journals, here and Elsewhere, to seek, by issues entirely unworthy of them, your defeat for Senator.

In the language of a gallant soldier, well known to you and to the Country. "To defeat Dick Yates for Senator would be as great an outrage as if Douglas had been beaten by his own party, when they attained the power, in 1858-9." and so it would be.

The Army below so well understood you were to be Senator, and so appointed it,
