The prosperity of the Hospital for eight years is due to the efforts of a set of gentlemen, of unquestionable integrity and entire singleness of purpose, who have served as its Trustees. In their Report they have seen fit to pay me some compliments, which candor compels me to say are mainly due to themselves. In assuming charge of the Hospital, ten years ago, I did it with a full determination that it should rank the first of its kind west of the Alleghenies. Since the retirement

We only lack, the completion of the Hospital, to make it a model of such excellence as may gratify the pride of every citizen of Illinois.

Gov. Yates

The apology due you for thus intruding myself upon your time and attention, you will find in the statement which, after long hesitation I have concluded to make - trusting to the noble and generous impulses of your nature for pardon should the liberty I am taking be unwarrantable and the request I make unreasonable --- I am unused to beg - for scarce anything else would I --

My husband Delos Carson enlisted in the U.S. service about Oct. 28th 1862 in the 3rd Ills. Cavalry - Co. I.

He served as private until some time in November or December of the following year when he recruited and was commissioned Captain of Battery D. 1st Alabama Heavy Artillery (Colored) -- afterwards 6th U. S. Heavy Artillery -- a part of which regiment you are aware helped make up the garrison at Fort Pillow - April last--

My Husband was of the number who survived the battle to be cruelly murdered after laying down his arms - for proof of which I beg leave to refer you to the published report of the Investigating Committee upon the conduct of the war &.c.

His body was placed in a coffin & [illegible] so that I could have it removed to this place - The season has arrived when I could best have it done & my greatest desire is to have it accomplished -- Leaving home - his business was sacrificed -- He served faithfully & well never leaving his post for once to visit even me ---

I have supported myself & child by teaching thus far - but my salary is too small (and I have received nothing from Government yet) to allow me the means of defraying the expense of a trip to the Fort & back with my husbands body -- a vacation occurs in our school between the 22nd of this & the 7th of next month. Could you among your constant acts of mercy and generosity give me a pass so that during my vacation I may accomplish that which next to my country's salvation is my intensest desire --- In giving my husband - I gave my all -- a costly sacrifice - if he had met his fate other [illegible] wise I might have felt a free one --- I address you upon this subject because you have shown yourself so preeminently the friend of the soldier & the unfortunate -- I might refer you to Kersey Fell or Judge Davis in regard to this statement -- Begging pardon for

Gov.

The papers since state that that he was wounded, and in Nashville. I have had no private information, except that he was severely wounded in the head

and could not be summoned without endangering his life and being perfectly rational preferred being left at Franklin, and was left there in care of one of our surgeons.

I cannot ascertain anything further than this or if he is at Nashville could I in any way get through to that place now? If he is at Franklin would it be possible for me, or any one, to get to him?

If you can give me any information, as to what can be done or might be done, you will greatly relieve a sorrow stricken heart.

Very Respectfully,

Eliza A. Lowry

Sedgwick is unwell and believes himself unable to serve. I found that he was not only physically but also politically sick. He stated that he knew "the people of Dupage to be in favor of Dick Yates for the Senate, and whereas he, (S.) could not conscientiously support the Governor, he preferred to resign." Of course no impediment was laid in his way and Sedgwicks resignation must be in your hands ere this. Yesterday I saw Mr Childs, the editor of the republican paper in Dupage, and our leading man. He is for you, though not as emphatically as I might desire, yet he did agree that no one should be nominated as S. successor, unless he stood pledged for you. This, I think, you can rely upon. The member from Lake I am not acquainted with, yet will endeavor to see him. As ever, your friend

Major Kelley, Ill. Vol., will probably be the nominee in Dupage

Hoffman Hon F.A.

He has been operating on Sedgwick. Finds him sick- not only physically but politically- and that he said that he Knew his constituents were in favor of Yates and as he could not concientiously support him he should resign__Supposes you have received his Resignation ere this__

The Editor of their County paper (the leading man) is not as Emphatically for you as he could wish- but promises that Sedgwick's successor shall support you__

His successor will probably be Maj. Kelly. & he thinks you can rely on him___

Governor Yates

                     Dear Sir:

While I was at Springfield the other day I desired very much to see you. I desired to have you write a letter to Mr Wood, our member of the legislature, in regard to the Senatorship. I knew that his predilections were for you: but soon something I had heard I was somewhat fearful that he had been impressed with the subterranean Current that is turning against you. I afterwards learned however that he had written to you to say that he should be for you He could not well be otherwise Considering the Sentiment of the people he represents

Another matter I wished to see you about was in regard to a meritorious and gallant young friend of mine who would like a commission as Major or Lieutenant

Colonel in Genl. Hancock's Corps now forming at Washington. We should have Called on you, but learning that you were very unwell we refrained My friend is Capt. George E. King of the 113th Ills Infty _ He was captured in June last in the fight under Sturges. For a considerable time was confined at Charleston under fire. Being removed to Columbia S. C. _ where he was without Shelter and fed on corn meal and some Sorgum he made his escape on the 4th of last November and after undergoing great hardships and perils he arrived at Hilton Head on the 18th. On arriving at N.Y. he was ordered home to await orders from Adjutant General at Washington. He has been at home only a few days. He has been in the Service nearly ever Since the war began and has been a brave, gallant and popular soldier. He possesses good address, a fine physique and is ambitious

to distinguish himself. And his Many friends desire him to have the opportunity. In his regiment the field offices are filled and beside there are four Captains who rank him If you can aid him in any way to promotion, you will do an act which will be gratefully received and which, I personally pledge myself, you will never have occasion to regret it. I am satisfied that he would be about equally relieved to have a Staff appointment to some Major General _ especially Genl. (Lopair?) or Washburn

If you prefer to have an interview with Capt. King before giving him the benefit of your influence he will call on you at Springfield. I suppose he will not receive orders from W. for some days yet

If you have the health and leisure I would be much gratified to have a letter from you in reply

                                                     Very Truly Yours

He thought of calling on you while at Sprfl'd to have you write to Woods, their member of Legislature. He thinks his (W's) predelictions are for you. but that he might be led astray by some of the current arguments used by the opposition He also wants you to use your influence for the appointment of his friend Capt King of the 113th Regt. as Major or Lt Co'l in Gen Hancock's Corps_ or failing in this to to a Staff appointment on Major Genl's Staff

WatseKa Dec 12th 1864

He thought of calling on you while at Sprfl'd to have you write to Woods, their member of Legislature. He thinks his (W's) predelictions are for you. but that he might be led astray by some of the current arguments used by the opposition He also wants you to use your influence for the appointment of his friend Capt King of the 113th Regt. as Major or Lt Co'l in Gen Hancock's Corps_ or failing in this to to a Staff appointment on Major Genl's Staff

[illegible] which is with Sherman. Said Soldier is on leave to report to his Company or Regiment at expiration of his time or be considered a deserter. and he has applied to me to know what he shall do. This is the case and how shall it be disposed of. Pardon me for writing you often But the Soldiers and many other here and in this region come to me for advise, and yet I have no direct authority to act in their matters. I would that it was otherwise. This is an important point and I could be of much service, to the Government if I had the Power. There is not an officer or medical examiner here lawfully. The Citizens here have signed a petition to the War Department to have me appointed a Medical examiner for this place. I sent it to my Brother J.C. I should like to know to whom I can correspond with in Springfield in regard to such matters as I am not [???ted] in Military Matters. I have been attending to sick Soldiers for some time and feel grateful that I can be of service to them but I find it a great tax on me but I must close as a Soldier has just come in on crutches to see what I can do for him.
