You wrote me a letter of reply, stating that when a suitable opportunity offered, you would do all that lay in your power. His friends here and with his regiment think they see in the the new Veteran Corps now being raised by Gen. Hancock, a fit opportunity. I distrusted the sincerity of the friendship of some, whose indiscretion, if nothing worse, asked your further indorsement in favor of one of the candidates for the Supreme Bench in this Grand Division, I pointed out to friends who had your confidence and should have made your interests paramount, that the nomination of candidates on the state ticket from the localities in the part of the State they desired would induce the combination you say has been made, and was the result most desired by the opposition to you. Medill has gone to Washington to be about a month or six weeks and during his absence, Horace White runs the machine. I think there will be no further departure from the strict neutrality of policy. As to Bross, I have never heard how he does stand - but I think he is your friend. You know the peculiarities of his disposition as well as I do. He is eminently social and good natured and desires to please everybody, but I do not believe he can be made a tool of by the opposition, or by the friends of Logan, Palmer, Washburn or anybody else. Should your <hr /> Excellency see fit to promote me, Capt. Henry Zeis of Co C would by reason of his rank be entitled to the position of Major.
