Your favors of the 14th instant is received. I received a letter from Nash of Ottawa a day or two ago in which he says that "Yates Stocks" is above par in that section. He says that Bushnell and the three representatives will go for you first, last and all the time. I think we can count up men enough on our [illegible] ends to give you the nomination on the first ballot.

Jo. Medill has gone to Washington to be about a month or six weeks and during his absence, Horace White runs the machine. I think there will be no further departure from the strict neutrality of policy. Mr. Medill assures me

there should be none. I know he has been represented to join in the fight, but he refuses. He favors your claims to the position, I know.

As to Bross, I have never heard how he does stand - but I think he is your friend. You know the peculiarities of his disposition as well as I do. He is eminently social and good natured and desires to please everybody, but I do not believe he can be made a tool of by the opposition, or by the friends of Logan, Palmer, Washburn or anybody else. Col Eastman is a fast friend of yours and is doing you good service. He feels entirely hopeful

Gov. Yates:

Dear Sir:

Perhaps it has escaped your mind owing to the many such letters you undoubtedly receive, and are compelled to answer. That Hon. M. L. Joslyn our Representative is a Lower House elect. and myself wrote you concerning a promotion of Adjutant Wm. E. Smith of the 124th Illinois Infantry. You wrote me a letter of reply, stating that when a suitable opportunity offered, you would do all that lay in your power. There is no vacancy in the field offices of his regiment, therefore he has no chance [of?] [promotion?] [there?].

His friends here and with his regiment think they see in the the new Veteran Corps now being raised by Gen. Hancock, a fit opportunity. Adjutant Smith has served two years and a half in the Army, and was officially complimented for his bravery in the battle of Grand Gulf and Champion Hills, in which last battle he was severely wounded. [illegible]

[illegible] this Veteran Corps is designed to be officered by such as he. Could you Governor give his permission to come home and recruit men, with a view to securing a Major's commission in one of the Regiments to be got up from this state. Perhaps you have power to secure his commission right out. If you will do so, or use your influence to do so, rest assured that the friends of Adjutant Smith of the 124th Illinois who are numerous and influential hereabouts, will be your friends true and steadfast. The Adjutant is endorsed by Gen. John A. Logan, his former division commander, also by Gen. Slocum on whose staff he served for a short time. And by Gens. [Leggett?], Force, M, L. Smith, and [illegible], under whom he has served at different times.

Please answer at your earliest convenience, and oblige.

Your obedient Servant,

I aught also to thank you for your Kind offer to assist me or my friends, should you have opportunity. I may wish to avail myself of your proffered Kindness I am at present in very poor health, And shall not probably be able to go to Springfield at the Commencement of the session of the Legislature, as I had intended. I have not been well since I left the Service in Augt. 1863. Not able to practice my profession, As I lost my health in the service of the Govt. I have thought I might be Entitled to some light duty in the service of the U.S. or State by which I could support my family. I would like to have the Post Office here Or the appt. of Bank Comr. in the State or something of that kind. The Gov Elect (Oglesby) knows me very well as the Q.M. of 22 Ill Vol Inft. But excuse me for troubling you this much You have my Earnest desire for your success, And shall have all the influence of Your friend and Obt Servt

Yours of the 9th inst. was duly rec'd. A thousand thanks for your Photo, I Esteem it very highly. I send you mine in return. I am sorry I had not one taken in Citizens dress.

Dear Sir

Once more I take the Liberty of Writing a few lines to you hoping you will do for me all you can.

Allow me Colonel, if you will not deem me presuming to much, to give you a true and correct history of my case. As you well aware I enlisted last winter as a Private in my old company again, was stationed 4 months as Clerk at General Whites Head Quarters, and recieved on the 24th day of May 1864 from His Excell: Gov Yates my commission as Captain of my old Company back again. I started imediatly for my co., took command of my company as you will see by enclosing orders, went trough several fights with them. I applied afterwards by Gen. Smith for muster, he ordered my muster, but mustering Officer would not must me, on account of smallness of Co. Afterwards I applied to be relieved from my comand, General Smith ordered me to report to Adjt. General for instructions, I done so. I came back to Springfield, reported, and Gen: Fuller told me himself, that I should go home to Chicago, and stay there, untill he could fix something about my case. I done strictly according to his Orders. Last Friday Colonel, I was arrested at my home as a deserter and locked up amongst Thieves, and Bountyjumpers at Camp Douglas; when I am innocent, and done strictly according to my Orders. - It is hard Colonel, a young man like myself, a man who served his adopted Country faithful as a Soldier and Officer for the last (4) four years to be locked up, amongst Deserters, when I done nothing, only what I am ordered do to, and probaly Adjt. Gen: Fuller

If you cant do anything else, please procure my release, trough the Governor", before Wuenesday; and I'll come to Springfield myself. - Then I done according to my orders.

by neglecting my case, I have to suffer here. I have been waiting here for the last 4 weeks for Gen: Fuller's orders but recieved none, even then here I done all I could for the good of the Country.

I went day and night around before the Election, to gett some of my Countrymen straight, and helpd to arrest some of the bushwackers; - If I only could gett to see some of my polit. Friends here, they would take some steps for me, but nobody is allowed to come to camp. If I col. was not innocent, and done strictly according to my Orders, I would not say anything.

Now I would beg of you Col. with all my heart, to go and see Gov: Yates yourself, explain him the whole case, let him see my Orders, they even have copies of them in the Adjt. Gen's office, and I know and satisfied that Gov. Yates a true Soldiers friend will have me or at least by his influence have me released; and mustered in as Capt; or not succeding in that mustered out of the Service, then it would Col. be very hard for me to serve as a Private amongst men, who I commanded for three years, and often had to punish. - No Colonel, Do all you can for me, I beg you, and soon, then I am informed from Hd. Quarters to day, that if I was not released by Wuenesday, I will be send to Cincinati.

Trough the influence of Lt. Morris Post Adjt, I procured the favor of sending those lines to you. Do all you can for me, and take at present or Soldier's thanks for it - I am Col.

From severe hardships in the Cumberland Army, I failed from the (forepart?) of last May - from affections of the heart and lungs, But kept with my command untill the 28th of June - at which time I was completely prostrated, And from different transfers from time to time - i was received in this Hospt. the 31st of August.

I have improved since I came here but am very far from being well yet, or ever expect to be - I have Served in the army two years and eight months in all I have had two Sons who enlisted with me, and they both have found a Soldiers grave, as I learned last week from my Second Son, who died in the cruel hands of the enemy ___ I also received late news from my wife which brings the inteligence of the death of a Daughter and that my wife through trouble and hardships, and a weak constitution is reduced to her bed the most of her time, having no one with her but a child three years old. __ Forcing a desire with much interest to be near my family is my reasons for asking for this transfer, Thinking perhaps that with what little Service I will be able to perform hereafter, I can do in Chicago as well as any other place. __ Hoping you will give this a due consideration and act as you

Did you ever see the work of a perfect "political (Illegible)", if not read this confidential circular. Quite a number came to this office to-day, and doubtless they are sent all over the State. Save this for me, if you do not want to use it otherwise All right here. Our Reps & Senator will be on hand Friday or Saturday before the meeting of the Legislature. Fuller writes me to propose him for Speaker and says you told him that I was coming out for him. I think our folks had better go for him.

Dear Governor:-

Did you ever see the work of a perfect "political (Illegible)", if not read this confidential circular. Quite a number came to this office to-day, and doubtless they are sent all over the State. Save this for me, if you do not want to use it otherwise All right here. Our Reps & Senator will be on hand Friday or Saturday before the meeting of the Legislature. Fuller writes me to propose him for Speaker and says you told him that I was coming out for him. I think our folks had better go for him.

                                                        Yours in Haste

                                                                                   Geo S. B

Bangs George S.

Aurora Dec 23rd 1864.

Encloses a confidential circular, all right up there, Rep & Senator will be down Friday or Saturday.
